On the third week of DI&V class, our lecturer gave us tutorial on combining organic and inorganic object in Photoshop by using masking. Then, we are required to recreate a surrealistic photo by Atomicus Dali.

Assignment

As for the assignment, we needed to find a surrealistic painting and produce a surrealistic photo montage based on the painting. The painting that I chose as my inspiration is Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush.

Image 2.8 Remove unwanted background by using mask and refine it with using various size of brush

Since I ain't satisfied with the result, I decided to make another one with different idea. I wanted to make it more surreal, thus I chose Castle in the Sky by George Grie.

Image 3.7 Place the base into the Photoshop and lock it, so it won't move when you are working on the top of it

Image 3.9 Eliminate the background by using mask, ensure the edge to look soft so it will blend in with the background

Image 3.10 Add cloud png and lower the opacity, then place it behind the city skyline

Image 3.11 Add more cloud in front of the city skyline, play around with the opacity to make it surreal

Image 3.13 Add more sea creatures and remove the unwanted background by using mask

Image 3.14 Refine the edge by adjusting the feather etc in "select and mask.."

Reflection

I really enjoyed doing this assignment since I could create whatever I want based on my imagination. However, erasing the background needs a lot of hard work and patience. Overall, I am satisfied with the second result :))
