Lecture/Tutorial 12 - Week 12 (22/11/2017)
This week's lecture is the final lecture which is about text/indicating paragraphs. There are several options for indicating paragraphs, whether using pilcrow (¶) or indent. Pilcrow is a holdover from medieval manuscripts which seldom used today.

Mr. Vinod also explained about line spacing, leading and alignment. Line space and leading actually not the same thing.  Line space is the space from ascender to the descender. Meanwhile leading is the space between 2 line spaces.

There are also 2 terms that is introduced to us, which are Widows and Orphans. Widows is short line of type that left alone at the end of a column of text. Meanwhile Orphans is a short line of type that left alone at the start of new column.

Work Process

Before I started sketching, I did some research as inspiration for my poster. Initially, I searched for black and white posters since I wanted to keep it classic.

Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul walked around the class to check our progress one by one. When they saw at my posters, they said that they prefer the second attempt since it looked more interesting than other posters and they told me to work on that one. Based on Mr. Vinod's feedback, I need to fill up the empty gaps in the letters and change the color to make it more attractive. I also got feedback from my peers and senior, they said that my font looked like festive theme, I picked muted colors for christmas season.

After the design has been approved, we could start working on the animation. The animation itself doesn't need to be complicated, a simple motion would be more recommended. Actually, Mr. Shamsul has already explained to us on how to animate our poster in Adobe Animate using classic tween. But we could also use Photoshop or Adobe After Effects.

Initially, I already started working on Adobe Animate. However, I was not satisfied by how it looks since the animation seemed laggy. So I decided to switch to After Effects, which I already familiar with.

We could work faster by importing the illustrator file into After Effects. In After Effects, each layer will be imported and we need to make sure that each object that we wanted to animate in separate layer.

Feedback

Week 12
Mr. Vinod saw my first and second attempts on the poster, and he said that the second on is better since it stand out more and has connection with each other. However, I still need to think on how to improve the poster since each letters seemed like separated islands.

Week 13
Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul walked around the class and checked our work. They came to my table and look at my progress. I did more attempts on the poster but they still prefer the second attempt. As I worked on my approved poster, Mr. Shamsul suggested to add fill up the gaps inside the letters. After I added those, I showed my work to Mr. Vinod then he asked me to change the color. Regarding the animation, Mr. Shamsul said that the animation was too slow and he told me to speed it up a little bit.

Reflections

Experience
On the week 11, When I did research for the poster, mostly the posters contain formal serif font. Then my senior suggested me to look up for festival themed poster since it suited my font more. On week 12, I was quite frustrated since we are limited to only using our fonts. I tried to add up more elements such as rectangle but it still doesn't seem to work. On week 13, after I explored more posters, I tried to stack up letters so it will look connected and finally it works.

Observation
On week 11, Mr. Vinod pointed out that some of my punctuation and numerals don't look even. I need to pay more attention towards the details. On week 12, since I was so used to using more visual in creating poster, this project was a challenge for me. On week 13, I observed that I have became more familiar in using the software, especially when doing the animation, Mr. Shamsul keeps telling me to make some changes, but I managed to do the changes in short time.

Findings
On week 11, I found that I need to explore deeper and deeper. Asking feedback from my peers and senior would also help me to develop more ideas. On week 12, I realized that I need to stay out from my comfort zone, although the design may look good in my view, it wouldn't look as good from others' view. On week 13, I found that although it seemed impossible to finish, I could always find a way to finish it.

Book of the Week

Typography by Ambrose/Harris

Typo : The Fundamentals of Typography by Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris

Image 3.1 Cover of both books
As for this week, I borrowed 2 books from the library. Both books are by Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris. I found out that they have released a lot of book regarding typography and design. Although the book aren't that thick, but they contain a good amount of decent explanation.

Frankly speaking, I prefer Typo more than Typography since it contains more visual explanation and dig in deeper compared to Typography.
